Panida screens Oscar-winning film Hamnet

By Reader Staff

The Panida Theater will screen one of 2025’s most award-winning films, Hamnet, on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. Based on the novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell, the film explores the early life of William Shakespeare and the eventual death of his 11-year-old son.

Directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, the film revolves around the romance between a young Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his eventual wife, Agnes Hathaway (2025 Best Actress Oscar-winner Jessie Buckley).

As the couple matures, Shakespeare leaves for London to pursue his playwriting career, but the two are brought back together by the loss of their son, Hamnet, to the plague.

Prepare to cry through this historical drama, which garnered eight Oscar nominations and was named one of the top 10 films of 2025 by the American Film Institute.

The film will show in the Panida main theater (300 N. First Ave., in downtown Sandpoint). Tickets are available online at panida.org or at the door for $10.50 for adults and $7.50 for students and seniors.
