Amateur historians host Let’s Vike It! Faire

The Viking Age-inspired fair Let’s Vike It! is returning to Newport, Wash. on Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12. Including vendors, food, entertainment and educational classes centered on ancient Norse culture, the free, family-friendly festival takes place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Newport City Park (1020 First St.).

Hosted by Aasveig, a nonprofit organization of “experimental historians” dedicated to promoting the history and culture of the Norse people of the Viking Age (795-1066 C.E.). The group hosts various events throughout the year, based out of its traveling tent museum that includes authentic artifacts. Demonstrations and hands-on activities include copper weaving, blacksmithing, shield making, fighting, axe throwing, rune reading, archery and wool spinning. The fair also includes plenty of historic- and fantasy-inspired vendors, musicians and dancers.
