Social isolation is endemic in rural communities like Bonner and Boundary counties, and especially affects people living with or caring for someone with mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Far North chapter is once again working to bring the community together and foster meaningful connections at its fifth annual NAMIWalks Your Way.
The group walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning at Matchwood Brewing Company (513 Oak St., in Sandpoint).

The accessible, family-friendly event is free and will include one- and three-mile routes along Sandpoint Community Trail, or attendees can stay in the Granary Arts District and enjoy the live music, refreshments, silent-auction items and mental-wellness resources.
“NAMIWalks is a powerful reminder that mental health affects all of us,” stated NAMI Far North President Dawn Mehra. “Every step helps build a community where people feel seen, supported and hopeful.”
According to the nonprofit, more than one in five adults in the U.S. live with a mental health condition and many more experience challenges such as stress, anxiety and grief. NAMI’s Far North chapter seeks to provide reliable information and education on mental health topics, as well as foster communities in Bonner and Boundary counties.
The organization’s free educational and advocacy programs include Sand Creek Connections, a rehabilitation day community where adults living with serious mental health challenges can develop skills, seek employment opportunities, find purpose and make lifelong friends in a safe space.
“For nearly 20 years, NAMI Far North has helped bring mental health out of the shadows in our community,” stated Kate McAlister, this year’s NAMIWalks honorary chair and event emcee. “It has increased awareness of the challenges people and families face, created hope for meaningful recovery and reduced stigma one conversation and connection at a time.”
Sponsors for the 2026 NAMIWalks include Blue Cross of Idaho, CareSource, Molina, Magellan, Bonner General Health, Talus Rock Retreat, VCA North Idaho Animal Hospital, Bonner County Human Rights Task Force, Eye Care for You, Finan McDonald, Kaniksu Community Health, North Idaho Neurotherapy, Numerica, Sandpoint Super Drug and NewLeaf Psychiatry and TMS.

Meet the Reader
Ever wonder who makes the Reader happen? Here's a behind-the-scenes look pieced together by summer 2017 intern McCalee Cain in which Ben, Cameron and Lyndsie explain what exactly about the Reader keeps them coming back to their shabby (but well-loved) office each week.
