On Friday, May 29, 2026, Dan Mimmack took his last breath in this life, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, creativity, generosity, laughter and love that touched countless people.
Many people in Sandpoint knew Dan as “The Pirate.” He delighted in bringing smiles to children’s faces and creating unforgettable experiences on the water. Through his beloved pirate boat, he gave many children — some who might never otherwise have had the opportunity — the chance to get out on the lake and simply experience joy. The ripples of those experiences spread far beyond what any of us may ever fully know.
Dan believed deeply in creativity and the power it had to change lives. One of his favorite sayings was, “Creative hands expand the mind.” Whether he was building furniture, crafting toys, creating experiences, or encouraging children to use their imagination, he was always looking for ways to inspire possibility in others.
Many homes throughout our community contain pieces of Dan’s craftsmanship. As a founder of Northwest Handmade Furniture in Sandpoint, he spent years creating beautiful furniture that will continue to be enjoyed for generations.
Dan was always dreaming, building, improving and bringing new ideas to life.
One of those dreams became the pirate boat. After finding an unfinished vessel in the Seattle area, he brought it home with excitement and determination to complete it. What began as a project became a passion and eventually a gift to the entire community. It was operated as a nonprofit for 14 years with a treasure chest filled with heartfelt stories and experiences.
Dan lived life wholeheartedly and brought laughter wherever he went. His spirit of giving was often quiet and behind the scenes, finding ways to help others without seeking recognition.
As the years went on, Dan faced Alzheimer’s disease with the same courage and determination that he brought to everything else in his life. Yet he never allowed himself to be defined by a diagnosis. Rather than living in that label, he chose to share his experiences openly with Alzheimer’s communities and others walking similar paths. He offered encouragement, understanding and hope to many people. Even during his own challenges, he continued finding ways to serve others.
So many beautiful souls supported Dan over the years with extraordinary kindness, friendship, care and love. Please know how infinitely grateful we are for each of you. Your support meant more than words can express. We love you all.
We are grateful that the pirate boat and its mission will continue. Mike Elliott will carry forward the role of captain, helping ensure that future generations of children and families can experience the same joy, wonder, laughter and adventure that Dan loved to share.

The community is invited to share with a celebration of life with us on Sunday, July 12 at City Beach Pavillion, 2 p.m. In the spirit of creating memories, the Wind Spirit will be docked nearby to commemorate Dan’s passion for offering opportunities for children of all ages to experience joy.
In place of flowers, those who feel called to honor Dan’s memory may contribute through TruSelf Passage at truselfpassage.com. Donations will support getting sails for the Wind Spirit, as well as assisting families in need and continuing the spirit of generosity, adventure and community service that Dan embodied throughout his life.
May his memory inspire each of us to live as fully as we can, to embrace adventure, to create, to laugh often, to love boldly, to support one another and to make memories that matter.

Sandpoint in Pictures
