Dazed and Confused, The Great Outdoors and others highlight August offerings

Alright, alright, alright, Sandpoint, are you ready for some big-screen nostalgia?
The Panida Theater’s Nostalgic Summer Movies series will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 with Richard Linklater’s iconic 1993 coming-of-age film Dazed and Confused.

The film follows a group of teenagers on the last day of school in 1976. The ensemble cast includes Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey and many more. Featuring a soundtrack filled with classic rock hits and a high school vibe that many can relate to, this is one of those films that brings a warm, comfortable feeling as soon as the opening credits roll.
The Great Outdoors will show next at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22. With a screenplay by John Hughes, the 1988 comedy stars Dan Aykroyd, John Candy and Annette Bening in her film debut.

When two very different families spend a vacation at a fictional resort in northern Wisconsin (though it was actually filmed in Bass Lake, Calif.), it’s the perfect setup for an ’80s comedy romp. While Akroyd’s character flaunts his wealth, Candy’s everyman provides comic relief with hijinks that keep hitting until the end.
The series concludes with Splash playing at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28.
The 1984 romantic fantasy comedy stars Tom Hanks in his early acting years, Daryl Hannah, John Candy and Eugene Levy.
The plot, which could only have come out of the ’80s, involves Hanks’ characters’ unexplained childhood experience, when he jumped from a boat — even though he couldn’t swim — only to encounter a girl beneath the waves who held his hands and allowed him to breathe underwater.

Twenty years later, he returns to the same area and falls into the sea again, being knocked unconscious and waking up on the beach next to a beautiful young mermaid played by Hannah.
The film follows this unconventional love affair between man and fish-woman, with lots of laughs and supporting characters that keep it lively along the way.
Tickets for each film are $10.50 after tax and fees for adults, and $7.50 for students and seniors. Get tickets at panida.org or at the box office (300 N. First Ave.).

Sandpoint in Pictures
