Fresh off the heels of its sold-out performances of Disney’s Frozen Jr. in June, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint presents Disney’s Aladdin KIDS, with performances at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14 at the Panida Theater (300 North 1st Ave., in Sandpoint).
Based on the 1992 Disney film, this family-friendly musical is specially adapted for young performers and audiences, making it an engaging show for all ages. Students performing the play are currently enrolled in the Music Conservatory’s Music Matters! Summer Academy, led by Director Janice Wall. Over the course of the two-week musical theater camp, the cast has stayed busy with auditions, set design and rehearsals in preparation for the final showcase.

“The process from start to finish is always fun,” said Wall. “It’s rewarding to meet kids that you’ve never met before, get to watch their talent emerge, and experience their excitement as they perform in front of people they don’t know.
“Right now, these kids are budding stars,” Wall continued. “They are developing their skills and ultimately learning how to communicate their message to the audience.”
A couple of Aladdin KIDS stand-out elements will be the choreography and costumes, which are a mix of pieces from MCS’ collection and local thrift shops like Bizarre Bazaar and Sanctuary Seconds.
“They let us borrow anything we find,” Wall said. “It’s amazing how the community comes together to support us.”
Audiences will enjoy the stage adaptation of the legendary tale of the thief with the heart of gold. All are invited to join Aladdin, Jasmine and the fast-talking, wisecracking Genie as they discover mystical caves, take magic carpet rides and outwit the evil sorcerer Jafar. The show includes musical favorites such as “Friend Like Me,” “A Whole New World” and “Prince Ali.”

Sandpoint in Pictures
Filmmaker Jimmy Matlosz of the Idaho Film Company has made a series of mini documentaries about influential Sandpoint locals, including the late Dann Hall and Erik Daarstad as well as icons Diane Michaels and Dan Shook.
