Texas-based band to play genre-defying show at Panida

If asked what genre his band Shinyribs plays, singer-songwriter Kevin Russell might respond, “All of them.”

The Austin, Texas-based supergroup is a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B, funk, horn-driven Memphis soul, country twang, honky tonk, Golden-Triangle Cajun, Arkansas jazz, border music, big band swing and roots-rock. They’re playing a special concert at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22 at the historic Panida Theater (300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint). Tickets are $40 at the door or on panida.org. 

The nine-piece is led by Russell, the charismatic frontman with colorful suits who rips on ukuleles just as often as he does electric guitars. 

Stage performances are just that — performances, with antics and theatrics blurring the line between music and stage arts.

Shinyribs shows run the gamut from tongue-in-cheek winks and nudges to poignant stories of family, loss, grief and love. The music is dominated by poetic lyrics and joyful sonic explosions.

This will be a dancing show, so be aware that choosing seats in the first few rows will have obstructed views from people getting up to dance in front of the stage. The opening act will be Mississippi artist Schaefer Llana.
